As mentioned, the LG 38UC99-W was the first 38-inch model on the market. While Dell’s Ultrasharp finally offered an alternative, our display tests indicate the U3818DW is more of the same, at least in image quality. It even has the same resolution: 3,840 x 1,600 pixels — the highest of any ultrawide PC monitor. Ultrawide monitors aren’t for everyone. Not only are they big, but they can be heavy as well. These big boys are intended for those with multitasking needs, and that generally trumps size and weight. Dell makes great lightweight monitors for general use, but the Dell UltraSharp 38 is for power users who need multitasking ability. This array is what we’d expect from a high-end monitor, and slightly better than LG’s display, which has fewer USB options.
Panel uniformity for the Dell U3821DW sample could be better since the left part of the extra wide screen looks slightly dimmer in some instances. Color shifts and loss of contrast aren’t noticeable, but dark images can show the variance. This aspect varies wildly between every unit, so there are better ones out there. Especially when having multiple photo tabs open.Productivity and external monitors go hand-in-hand. This is especially true for the new wave of curved monitors, which are more immersive, comfortable, and easy on the eyes for day-to-day office or home use. But while these monitors are common for gaming, it’s rare to see them in the productivity space, with features needed for the office or the home. I’ll end my review by noting some of the unique and extra features of the Dell UltraSharp 38 Curved USB-C Hub Monitor. The first of those is how you can actually connect two PC sources to this monitor. Dell’s own intelligent Auto KVM feature will detect the latest connected PC and seamlessly switches controls over.
