About this deal

The album was reissued on CD in 1990 by I.R.S. Records in the U.S, and in 2012 by Edsel Records in the UK and Shout! Factory in the U.S. [3] Artwork [ edit ]

I wasn't that much into the ska-revival movement which came to prominence in the UK in the late 70's but some of it I liked. I'd say there were three main bands who flew the flag, The Specials who I never cared for, too po-faced, Madness, at times too poppy and The Beat who sort of straddled both and who I probably preferred of all of them. And the record has dated a bit, of course. That's true of most 2 Tone and it's true of most New Wave and Post Punk. The difference, for me, with those latter genres is that I like them. I don't care how dated Post Punk sounds now because it's a style I generally really like. The same goes for (much) New Wave. But with 2 Tone I find the sound very much of a time and that's true of this record. It's not that I dislike it so much as that it recalls a very specific time, one I wasn't alive for, and that is a big part of the appeal. This record has that same vaguely echoy sound that so much 2 Tone and Post Punk has. (Though obviously it's more extreme and prominent in Post Punk.) And in the case of 2 Tone, I'm not sure what it adds to it. British album certifications – Beat – I Just Can't Stop It". British Phonographic Industry . Retrieved 19 November 2020. DVD-8 broadcasted on 12th December 1980 and is a film from a live performance at Top Rank Suite, Birmingham. However, they're probably at their best when they combine these two strains which they do superbly on the set's biggest hit "Mirror In The Bathroom" with its almost lead bass and eddying guitar-sound, the fun pop-reggae of "Hands Off... She's Mine" complete with Roger's amusing intervention as the girl's dad, the urgent, twisty-crawly "Twist & Crawl" and yet another single, "Best Friend" which is so jangly it could almost have been flown in by the Byrds The DVD has a couple of videos and Top Of The Pops appearances. They were on that show five times in total during this period, the high charting of the singles allowing them two performances apiece for Tears Of A Clown and Hands Off…She’s Mine. The highlight of the video material is a short but sweaty live performance of Hands Off…She’s Mine performed live in the Top Rank Suite venue in Birmingham . This was broadcast on British TV on 12 December 1980 in a programme called Alright Now. There is some before-show banter from the band (“I can’t tune this guitar!”) and an brave attempt at mixing live action and animation ( Roger Rabbit eat your heart out). CTDB TOCID: pVjYBQLyLeJ7jkWhLwlwrRwemlw-] found, Submit result: pVjYBQLyLeJ7jkWhLwlwrRwemlw- has been confirmed Most songs on I Just Can’t Stop It (Edsel EDSG 8016) are group compositions, and all show the stylistic diversity at hand. Today, the album jars for its incisive, dark lyrics (a hallmark shared by Costello) juxtaposed with felicitous melodies, even more ripe for dancing in the extended mixes contained on the bonus discs. Besides the desire to mix “the energy of punk and the groove of dub in a three-minute single,” The Beat made clear its mission statement to embrace the personal as well as the political. It’s those songs emphasizing the latter that give the album much of its primal power. Musically, the band takes a violent approach to the resolutely non-violent “Two Swords” (“I’ve never been one for the punch-ups/But look, I really hate them Nazis/A certain something starts to wind me up/How could I hate them oh so violently?”) and there’s no shying away from the edgy venom of “Twist and Crawl.” The English class system has long been a source of fascination and frustration for writers, artists and musicians, and the Beat made their views clear in “Big Shot” : “Yes, I’ve seen you go to work in your big car/Yes, you’re fat and can afford to be tasteless/You’re a big shot…”

Rhino recently acquired the worldwide rights to The English Beat’s catalog and is marking the beginning of this exciting partnership with the release of an expanded version of the influential ska group’s 1980 debut, I Just Can’t Stop It.Wha’ppen? (Edsel EDSG 8017), the second of the three reissues, preserves the original 12-song U.K. album sequence on Disc 1. For their sophomore outing, the members of The Beat and returning producer Bob Sargeant opted for a lower-key vibe but with equally sharp lyrics. Album opener “Doors of Your Heart” again espouses the band’s message of “love and unity,” its pretty pop ceding to a proto-rap toasting interlude from Ranking Roger. It sets the pop-reggae tone of the album, with much of the punk fire tamped down, at least in the sense of music and arrangement. The lyrics were still incendiary and in touch with the political climate of the day. Most excitingly, there is ample video footage of the band on the third disc, a DVD in NTSC format. There are two Top of the Pops performances of “Tears of a Clown” and “Hands Off…She’s Mine” plus singles videos for “Mirror in the Bathroom” and “Best Friend,” and bonus performances of “Alright Now” and “Hands Off.” I Just Can't Stop It - Label: '℗ 1980 / Arista Records', no 'Marketed...' / runouts without 'DIGITAL' (A4 or A6 / B4) Filename C:\Users\mark\Music\Rips\FLAC\The Beat\I Just Can’t Stop It\01 - Mirror In the Bathroom.wav Filename C:\Users\mark\Music\Rips\FLAC\The Beat\I Just Can’t Stop It\02 - Hands Off... The later is included on the bonus disc along with the flip-side Ranking Full Stop (it was a double A-side single).Today’s CD is “I Just Can’t Stop It” By The English Beat. If things has gone to plan, I would be heading for a train at Bedford Station to take me to Harpenden to see The Beat – or at least a version of The Beat. Lots of fine pubs in Harpenden. Of well – it has now been changed to 28th June next year – I hope it goes ahead!
