About this deal

By rejecting non-essential cookies, Reddit may still use certain cookies to ensure the proper functionality of our platform. A significant amount of musicality just evaporates instantly when you load up a stereo version of an early Beatles track. The Beatles in Mono was released to reflect the fact that most of the Beatles' catalogue was originally mixed and released in the monophonic format. For decades, we've all been swimming in the great stereo sea, enjoying almost all of our audio content in stereo.

An unknown quantity of unnumbered red boxes (sometimes reported to be between 300 and 500) were issued in the UK, while 1000 numbered black boxed sets were assembled and issued in the United States by the Dutch East India Trading Co. All albums are packaged in miniature vinyl sleeves that faithfully recreate the original LP releases down to the finest detail including inner sleeves, inserts and are presented with the original LP labels on the CDs. The set debuted at number 40 on Billboard's Top 200 chart and the magazine reported that 12,000 copies were sold in its first week of release. The vinyl set includes a 108-page book which also includes many rare photographs of the Beatles in Abbey Road Studio, fascinating EMI archive documents and evocative articles sourced from 1960s publications. The same holds true for the songs " The Ballad of John and Yoko", " Old Brown Shoe" and the single mix of " Let It Be", which were also omitted. In Japan, it debuted at number 10, selling over 20,000 copies in its first week on the Oricon album charts. But, I'm wondering if there's a release that has true mono that never got the fake stereo processing.

When you're listening to music being played, live, in front of you, the singer's voice isn't only coming out of the right speaker. John Lennon did not like the stereo mix of his song " Revolution" on the 1967-1970 compilation album. I love hearing the voices that come from different channels when it is not a single performer - a singer accompanied by an orchestra -, which, obviously, should be heard in the center. The premise of this box set was to compile only Beatles material which was released or prepared for release with a dedicated mono mix (the set excludes later material mixed and released only in stereo, and material whose mono version was simply created as an equal mix of the two channels of the stereo version, e.I don't have it in front of me, but I think the one I bought many years ago is the 2 CD Lingasong Records release that is the same as the Lingasong LP version that came out in 1977.

In the last few years, I've been listening to a lot more pre-stereo recordings on LP and on 78 disks. Anyway, it's an incredibly well made set - beautiful visually and most importantly, sounds incredible! These are either "a revelation", "interesting", an "aberration" or "historical revisionism" depending on who you ask. It's nice when you play a track, the music envelops you, and you can place the elements of the track on a virtual stage all by ear. The thirteen-disc (fourteen on LP) collection contains the remastered mono versions of every UK Beatles album released in true mono, plus Magical Mystery Tour, which in 1967 was only issued as an LP (in mono and stereo mixes, and augmented with the A- and B-sides of their recent singles) in the USA, Canada and a few other countries; in the UK and many other countries it was originally only issued as a 6-track double soundtrack EP (in both mono and stereo versions) and the album version wasn't issued until 1976, and then only in stereo.Sure, streaming services such as Tidal and Apple Music will let you listen to Dolby Atmos mixes of music, but generally when listening to music, stereo is what you're going to get. Reddit and its partners use cookies and similar technologies to provide you with a better experience. Accordingly, you don't even really 'choose' to listen to music in stereo; often, it's the only option. Of course, this was a huge oversimplification and I was wrong to think that the choice was so obvious, but it's an easy oversimplification to make in the modern day, especially if you're on the younger side of the spectrum.
