About this deal

Again, when narrowing down your choice of an air conditioner, knowing how big an area you need to cool is your best friend. Based on that, you can calculate sq ft to BTU and immediately know what range of BTU values your perfect AC unit should be. To better illustrate what size of an air conditioner you need, let’s have a look at a BTU chart: Air Conditioner BTU Chart; With 12,000 BTU (1 Ton) Room Size Example

There are different ways to cut this where I could calculate anything from 7,500 to 15,000 units, but am considering to go with a 12,000 unit on balance. Does this seem reasonable?Kandola says the most popular options for portable air conditioners are 9,000 and 12,000 BTU, which would cool a room of around 21 and 30 square metres respectively. Remember that the exhaust pipe will need to be run outside through a window and the gap sealed if possible. Window kits are sold for this purpose - see below. Do portable air conditioners use a lot of electricity?

The living room unit is 6,500 BTU and the bedroom unit is 6,000 BTU. I use them only for those rooms. The BTUs are more than adequate for the spaces, but the units are too old to work properly and need to be replaced. Hello M, nice plan. Your calculations for the master bedroom with bathroom and another bedroom sound about right. The cathedral ceiling open concept area is fun indeed. 🙂 Calculating the full volume of that area is a bit complex. Let’s simplify it a bit; a 1,000 sq ft area with 16 ft average ceiling height. For that you would need somewhere between 40,000 and 50,000 BTU; depending on insulation, sun exposure, and so on. Now, 1 mini split with 1 air handler (single-zone) won’t work, since you have 3 stories and a lot of rooms. Ideally, you should use 1 air handler per 1-3 rooms. In your case, it would make sense to get a 4-zone or 5-zone mini split (these units consist of 1 outdoor unit and 4 or 5 indoor air handlers). Let’s say you are using five 12,000 BTU indoor air handlers (for a total cooling output of 60,000 BTU or 5 tons). You would put 1 air handler on the 3rd story, 2 in the 2nd story, and 2 in the 1st story. This is how you think about adequately providing both cooling output as well as much-needed airflow and output distribution. Hello, I’m looking for a solution for our new house with casement windows. Ultimately, I know a mini-split system will be best, but it’s out of our budget right now. So, we’re looking at getting several portable units with plexiglass window covers (with cutouts for the exhaust). The master bedroom is on the 2nd floor, 425 sf, including the bathroom. Mostly 8′ ceilings with one peaked area up to 12′. I’m assuming a 12,000 or 13,000 BTU unit. Another bedroom is 160 sf, so I’m assuming an 8,000 BTU unit. We probably won’t run this one unless we have guests. Now here’s the fun part- an open concept area with the living room, dining room, kitchen, plus the hall, laundry room, a half bath, and a full bath. That area is about 900 or 1000 sf, with many windows and a cathedral ceiling in the living room up to 25 feet or more. I’m thinking 3 units- one in the living room, one in the laundry room doorway in the hall (aimed at the kitchen), and one on the upstairs landing above the living room. But I don’t know what size I’ll need for those 3 units. Any advice? Anything we need to be aware of for electrical systems? Or single vs dual hose units? We’re in the northeast US. Thanks for your help! ReplyHi George, I can imagine that the combined 6 tons of cooling is not nearly enough. There are a lot of factors here but if we just use the main two of them: 20 BTU per sq ft rule of thumb and number of people. You have 9 ft ceiling height, which would yield a 22.5 BTU per sq ft. For 3600 sq ft, that’s 81,000 BTU or 6.75 tons. The current Mr Cool mini splits could handle this room, if it were empty. What other heat sources are present in the room? For example, light bulbs, computers, and technical devices with power supplies, such as televisions or music systems. The number of watts you need more. Cools, dehumidifies and ventilates over two-speed modes, keeping you cool during different types of heat, with an LED display for easy control You can start with a smaller cheaper portable dehumidifier. If that dehumidifier, working with the 5 ton AC unit, can lower the humidity levels below 50%, your AC will be able to generate more airflow and provide relatively more cooling since it doesn’t have to struggle against high humidity levels. If a portable dehumidifier is too small, a ducted dehumidifier is a solution.

My bedroom measures 155 sqft, 8ft ceiling, it is South Westerly facing, so it has sun from around 10:00 until it sets and a large window measuring 6 ft x 4 ft. If you want to properly cool down a 300 square foot area (or room), you need a 6,000 BTU air conditioner. Obviously, the problem arises when you have a tiny 12×12 room, for example. According to the US Department of Energy directive, an air conditioner’s most appropriate size would be 2,880 BTU unit. The best you can do here is to buy a small 5,000 BTU window or a small 8,000 BTU portable AC unit (more about the smallest AC units here). How many people are in the room? One person gives off 100 watts of heat, which the air conditioner must compensate for.

It is a 137 square foot bedroom with 8 foot ceilings. There is also an additional raised platform space that is about 4 feet high from the platform to the ceiling and is 135 inches wide and 27 inches deep. Easy to Clean– Removable air filter, keeping the air that circulates around fresh and clean for hygiene. The cooling capacity of the AC-5670 Air Conditioner is 7000 BTU and 2.1 kW, making the air conditioner suitable for a room up to 60 m³. The air flow produced by the air conditioner is up to 320 m³ / h. You can of course set the temperature yourself from 16⁰C to 31⁰C. Because the air conditioner has three options, you can also use the air conditioning to dehumidify the air or as a fan. Enjoy coolness when you go to sleep. With the handy timer function you can leave the air conditioning on for a while, while you fall asleep in a cool room. The air conditioning then switches itself off after a considerable time. Smart Wi-Fi air conditioning, controllable with the HomeWizard Climate app, voice control and remote control Cooling the living room and the kitchen as one consolidated space is a much easier proposition. Until this summer, I haven’t minded having a hot kitchen. But with the need to work from home now, it would be a huge benefit to have another fully habitable room.
