After discussing the evolution of Kickstarter, we’re going to be reviewing the Robots expansion for MonsDRAWsity from Friendly Skeleton Games and The Artemis Project from our sponsor Grand Gamers Guild. It’s really quite a puzzle and seasoned trick-taking players will take a while to get their heads around this idea. If you want a fast, engaging two-player card game filled with table talk, challenges and bravado, go with The Fox in the Forest.

The Fox in the Forest is really compact and I think it’s a game that will travel with us a lot – we’ll just sacrifice the point tokens for a piece of paper and the game is just 33 cards. There are quite a few to choose from and it’s a mode that is seemingly setup perfectly to add more down the line. On such a date night I want to talk and interact with my wife while playing, not sit in silence and play a game together.So, yes, if you’ve got a trick-taking game to review, please let me know and I’ll see if I think I can get it played and then reviewed. It would have been great if the special cards were symmetrical, like picture cards in a set of normal playing cards.

There is a well-developed trail system of about 22 miles that receive heavy, year round use by hikers, cross-country skiers, snow-shoers, hunters and mountain bikers. The side of the board and the number of gems placed will depend on the difficulty level you want to play the game at. The best tactic is to always throw away the best card you can and yet still lose, then try and manipulate the trump suit to be one you have little to no cards of.

That sounds confusing, but the game is really all about ensuring the player wins the trick and can move a useful number of spaces, without falling off the track. In Fox in the Forest this is a good thing, because at the end of the round you get points depending on how many tricks you won. To me each game fills a different niche and each niche is somewhere I’m willing to play depending on my mood.

Every game we played of Duet was played almost silently, whereas our games of The Fox in the Forest are very vocal and interactive with lots of socializing. For The Fox in the Forest: Duet, I was able to teach the game immediately after reading the rules once. The Fox allows you to swap out the round’s trump card (which is labeled the ‘decree’ and is dealt face up at the start of the round) with any card in your hand, changing the suit for the rest of the round, or at least until your opponent plays a fox card.Its theme is based on an original fairy tale by Alana Joli Abbott – a theme that leads to beautiful artwork of fairy tale characters and woodland creatures.
